The young turtle and rabbits from Disney's Robin Hood

Zootopia (2016) and Robin Hood (1973)

As it’s still November, one last hurrah before we dive into Christmas.

Zootopia (2016; Disney+)

Zootopia’s first rabbit cop is only grudgingly accepted on the force, but when she teams up with a fox, she discovers that a kidnapping case—and discrimination—are more complex than she thought. This movie tackles real-world themes with nuance, wit, and compassion. The filmmakers went back to movies like Dumbo (1940) for inspiration to access the genuine human emotion that makes the Disney classics. Maybe I should just say “genuine emotion,” as these are all talking animals wearing clothes! But that’s classic Disney too, as our next film reminds us.

For sensitive viewers: Occasional mild language, animal violence, and a scene with humor about animal “nudity.”

Robin Hood (1973; Disney+)

Here we have the classic tale of Robin Hood—who steals from the rich and gives to the poor—starring animated Disney animals! These songs can’t be beat. Great story with a variety of likeable characters, joyful heart and genuine drama. Memorable voice acting too, from music and TV stars Phil Harris, Andy Devine, Pat Butram, George Lindsey, Ken Curtis… and Peter Ustinov!? The last triumph of classic Disney before the descent into post-Walt darkness. And it’s a jolly time.

For sensitive viewers: One scene with humor about a snake getting accidentally drunk. It’s the 1970s.

“What About Zootopia 2?”

I haven’t seen it yet! The trailer just looks like more of the same as the first movie—without the originality and nuance. But hey, I don’t judge a movie by its trailer. If I did, I’d think Up (2009) and Big Hero 6 (2014) were just goofy kids’ movies. Nevertheless, I’m not going to pay to see the sequel on the strength of the first movie alone—“It’s called a hustle, sweetheart!”
