Tomorrowland (2015) and Pete's Dragon (1977)

As we enter November, a couple of films that feel like a refreshing, cool breeze.

Tomorrowland (2015; Disney+)

A smart young woman finds a pin that seems to transport her to a utopia of invention and hope. This live-action movie from director Brad Bird (The Incredibles) combines a sci-fi action plot with the charm of a road movie. Memorable characters, humor, and heart. Meaningful commentary on how we imagine the future: what if it didn’t have to be bleak?

For sensitive viewers: two scenes of sci-fi action violence (decapitating or whacking a human-like robot) and occasional mild language.

Pete’s Dragon (1977; Disney+)

A young boy finds a new home with the help of his . . . dragon! This may be my favorite movie from the 1970s. It’s a musical, and the songs are top-notch, fun, and moving. It’s a long one (over two hours), but you couldn’t ask for a better down-to-earth, family-friendly adventure. Actors include Shelley Winters and Mickey Rooney.

For sensitive viewers: alcohol and drunkenness in several scenes. It’s the 1970s.
